Food Plots Create Predictable Movement

Destination food plots and hunting, or kill plots, serve distinct purposes in wildlife management, catering to different phases of a deer's daily and seasonal activities. Destination food plots are larger expanses strategically positioned within the property, often near bedding areas. These plots act as primary feeding locations, providing a consistent and abundant food source. Their purpose is to attract and sustain wildlife, offering a sanctuary where deer can graze without feeling threatened. On the other hand, hunting or kill plots are smaller, strategically located near travel routes between bedding and feeding areas. These plots are designed to intercept deer during their movements, creating opportunities for hunters to capitalize on their predictable behavior. While destination plots focus on overall habitat improvement and attracting wildlife, hunting plots are tactical tools, enhancing the likelihood of a successful hunt by capitalizing on deer movement patterns. Balancing both types strategically within your property can contribute to a holistic and effective wildlife management plan.

Diversity is King...   Click to see more

The significance of forage diversity in food plot seed mixes cannot be overstated.  Deer who are selective browsers exhibit a distinct preference for blended food plot seed mixes that encompass a variety of plant species. This preference is particularly pronounced when compared to monoculture plantings of the same forage type, a common feature in many of the food plot seeds available in today's market.

Understanding the dietary habits of white-tailed deer is crucial. Their innate inclination towards a diverse mix stems from the natural variability of plant species in their habitat. Blended mixes not only enhance the appeal of the food plot but also contribute to a more comprehensive nutritional profile for white-tailed deer. The inclusion of various plant species aligns with the deer's evolved dietary preferences, providing a range of flavors and textures that sustain their interest and consumption.

In contrast, monoculture plantings may lack the diverse appeal and nutritional complexity that deer instinctively seek. From a deer biologist's perspective, advocating for diverse seed mixes is a strategic approach to wildlife management, ensuring that food plots contribute positively to the overall health, vigor, and sustainable population dynamics of white-tailed deer.

Better Seed, Better Plots...   Click to see more

After extensively exploring various food plot seeds and blends for numerous reasons, we encountered challenges in finding the perfect fit for our specific needs. Over several growing seasons, we dedicated our efforts to developing a customized food plot seed blend. However, the process faced delays due to the limited availability of larger tracts of tillable acreage for testing, development, and fine-tuning.

Recognizing the time constraints, our quest led us to a food plot seed distributor already working on a very similar seed blend. Vitalize Seed had initiated the journey earlier and possessed the resources to plant and experiment on a larger scale than we could. Following several seasons of using their seed blend, it became evident that we had stumbled upon the exact formula we had been tirelessly searching for.

The One, Two System...    Click to see more

Using Vitalize Seed's innovative 1,2 System, which encompasses two strategically timed plantings for optimal food plot success. The system kicks off with a Spring/Summer planting featuring a diverse mix of 13 carefully selected plant species, including legumes, brassicas, grasses, and broadleaves. With a lower Carbon to Nitrogen ratio, this mix serves as a powerhouse, enriching the soil with nitrogen and essential nutrients through microbial processes. Rapid decomposition, driven by natural biological processes, not only provides nutrients but also aids in weed control, setting the stage for a flourishing Fall planting.

This Spring/Summer mix excels in below-ground biomass production, sequestering atmospheric nitrogen, fostering diverse root structures, and proving easy to grow through various methods. Its allure extends from birds, bees, and bucks , making it highly attractive for a range of wildlife. With the foundation laid by the Spring/Summer planting, it is terminated when the time is right, making way for the Fall crop. This second phase is a highly diverse mix of 16 varieties, including grains, grasses, brassicas, and legumes.

This Fall crop, characterized by its browse tolerance, winter hardiness, and exceptional tonnage, thrives after the Nitro Boost application. Acting as a weed barrier in the following Spring, it quickly greens up, immediately photosynthesizing and feeding soil biology, becoming an irresistible source for whitetails. The diverse root structures in this mix allow the sequestration of nutrients from deep within the soil profile, contributing to the overall health of the soil. As the higher Carbon to Nitrogen thatch slowly breaks down, it feeds the soil microbiology, ensuring sustained soil fertility and providing a foundation for high-quality soil. This comprehensive 1,2 System maximizes attractiveness and nutritional value, creating an environment where your food plots flourish, and wildlife, especially whitetails, thrive.

 Bedding and Cover

Create a sanctuary for whitetails with strategically designed bedding areas on your property. These secluded spaces offer deer a sense of security and peace, encouraging them to make your land their home. Bedding areas serve as essential resting spots, minimizing stress and providing a safe haven for deer to recharge, ensuring a sustainable and thriving population for your hunting endeavors.  Enhance your property's security cover to elevate its appeal to deer. Dense vegetation, well-designed thickets, and strategically placed cover provide deer with a feeling of safety. Security cover not only reduces stress for whitetails but also creates an environment where they feel confident to move, feed, and bed, increasing the predictability of their movements for improved hunting success.

Patch Cut Openings

Introduce patch cut openings to diversify your landscape and attract a variety of wildlife, including deer. These openings provide a mix of sunlight and shade, fostering the growth of preferred forages. Patch cuts are excellent for promoting the regeneration of native vegetation, offering a buffet of nutritious options for deer and enhancing the overall biodiversity of your property.

Hard and Soft Mast Crop Tree Release

Implementing hard and soft mast crop tree release practices ensures a sustained nutritional balance for local deer populations. By selectively managing mast-producing trees, you enhance the availability of acorns, nuts, and fruits, crucial components of a deer's diet. This deliberate release encourages healthier vegetation and increases the overall carrying capacity of your land, supporting robust deer populations and enhancing hunting opportunities.
